Image of man framed with a circular effect in dark brown, and sitter stares to the side of the camera Edward Samuel Broughton was born in Quebec, Canada, in 1842. He emigrated to New Zealand where he became the proprietor of the Provincial Hotel. In 1971 Edward married Janet Gibson, although there are no recorded children. Janet died in 1978 aged 48 years, and in December that year Edward went on to marry Harriett Emma Simpson. Together they had one daughter, Jeannette Ellen in 1879, who went on to marry Bernard Francis Scannell in Capetown in 1905. During his time in Whangnui he built two houses; one cottage on the river bank near Urqhart Street, and also a property named 'Sans Souci' on Durie Hill. He also purchased a ketch named 'Marie Louise' in 1870, and owned 16 shares in another ship named the 'Kaimua' in 1871. Edward Samuel Broughton died on 13th April 1881 aged 39 years. Harriet Broughton did not remarry, and died in 1923 aged 68 years.
