Name/Title TAPA: NGATU TAHINA
Brief Description Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); ngatu tahina, Tongan barkcloth characterised by large areas of light brown with simple to complex patterns. Plain border at one end with simple parallel line pattern in black and brown. A small hand-print also visible on border. Body of tapa is divided into 4 bands of pattern going across. Pattern is made from a leaf kupesi (pattern board) with the main motif of an elongated triangular shape, repeated X 3 on each section and also overpainted in dark brown/black dye are circles in either one or two on each segment. There is a patterned border. then the pattern starts again. The end of tapa is cut off. This tapa was preivously attached to tapa 1802.330 by linen thread but been detached by staff 6/9/99
