Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera; siapo mamanu, Samoan barkcloth with freehand painted patterns with a black and brown resinous glaze of o'a sap mixed with charcoal from lama nut kernels. Small,square in shape, tapa motif is divided into 36 small squares with two alternating and repeating motifs based on the fa'a'al'alo a ( trochus shell pattern) coloured brown and black. Siapo has a brown border also decorated with a variation of the fa'a'al'alo' a ( trochus shell pattern) The two alternating and repeating motifs link up to form other patterns within the main pattern.
