Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); ngatu tahina, Tongan barkcloth characterised by large areas of light brown with simple patterns. Mick Pendergrast (Auk.Museum) 30.9.91) from a photo describes it as unusual restrained pattern; however with the exception of wide border each end. Body of cloth decorated from a design board but only lines, dividing body into 25 squares. Have been printed to top surface and then highlighted with free hand overpainting. Within each square and on both borders free hand overpainted patterns including floral motif, Parallel lines and diamonds; Two layers.
