Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); siapo mamanu, Samoan barkcloth with freehand painted patterns with a black and brown resinous glaze of o'a sap mixed with charcoal from lama nut kernels. Brown border, body of barkcloth divided into 30 squares each containing fa'a'aveau (starfish) motif, alternating squares being brown/black. Two motifs have lines extending from side or each starfish leg giving the impression of hairs. ? Is this centipede pattern.
