Name/Title TAPA: SIAPO MAMANU
Brief Description Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); siapo mamanu,? Samoan barkcloth, unsure of motif origin ? Niuean (Samoan influence).Tapa divided into 4 strips, two of the strips have pattern which features an over-painted "iron cross" motif, the other two strips feature diagonal stripes. There are 2 thin `border stripes' which have a repeating floral and triangular motif. Outside edge is painted dark brown. overpainting appears to be done with dye similar to samoan ( black and brown resinous glaze of o'a sap mixed with charcoal from lama nut kernels) Tapa is rectangular. A small white tag says "H.C. Edwards" attached to a corner.
