Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera). Siapo mamanu, Samoan barkcloth with freehand painted patterns. Pattern is divided into 4 main quadrants then into 16 and 20 smaller ones each containing either a flower or starfish (fa'a' aveu) motif. Heavy black/brown resinous glaze (dye) of o'a sap mixed with charcoal or black dye from lama nut kernels and yellow dye ? tumeric. Two top quadrants contain 16 patterns. . .
