Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); brown dye; siapo mamanu, Samoan barkcloth with freehand painted patterns, heavily painted with a black and brown resinous glaze of of o'a sap mixed with charcoal ofr black dye from lama nut kernels. Tapa is square in shape, two types of design tablet have been used. one small, one large composed of diagonal lines. of small triangles. The border has been overpainted. This siapo was sewn to 1802.322 and numbered Tapa 1. Removed by staff 6.9.99
