Brief Description Barkcloth (tapa) made from inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); brown dye; siapo mamanu, Samoan barkcloth with a black and brown resinous glaze of o'a sap mixed with charcoal from lama nut kernels .Freehand painted patterns of plant motifs fa'a atualoa (centipede), fa'a ali'ao (trochus shell) and possibly fa'a aveau (starfish). 3 sides have fringe comprised of triangular tassles. Wide border on 3 sides, of leaf patterns. (4th border absent). Body of cloth divided into quadrants containing alternate starfish and centipede motifs. Cloth is in two parts (a & b) with one border and center of cloth removed. (A= 3 sides B= 1 side).
