Barkcloth (tapa) made from the inner bark paper mulberry tree (Broussonetia papyrifera); ngatu tahina, Tongan barkcloth characterised by large areas of light brown with simple to complex patterns for everyday use. Plain coloured borders with simple line patternsand triangular shapes in black and brown dyes. The body of the tapa is divided into eight sections which are decorated with simple line patterns rubbed from a kupesi board. Scattered intermitently over the tapa are stencil designs of a vase with a flower in it, an iron cross (or manulua), leaf patterns and a branch with three leaves on it. The tapa is rectangular in shape and was probably used as a wall hanging.
