These four volumes in a series are titled "Spectacle de la Nature: or, Nature Displayed, Being Discourses on Such Particulars of Natural History As were thought most proper To Excite the Curiosity And Form the Minds of Youth" and numbered Vol. I (a), Vol. II (b), Vol. III (c) and Vol. IV (d). They are illustrated with copper plate prints; this is the fourth edition, translated from French.
All volumes have a bookplate inserted, printed with the name of Chas Smith and a stylised dog with an olive branch. Charles Smith was an amateur collector and gentleman farmer who lived at Te Korito by the Whanganui River, opposite Kaiwhaiki pa, during the mid-late 19th century.
