Brief Description This sepia-toned carte de visite photograph of Mr William Napier was taken by Frank R Huff at the American Photographic Rooms on Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. The head-and-shoulders portrait is of a man with tidy hair and a beard, faded around the edges and mounted on backing card. The photographer's mark is printed on the reverse.

William Napier was born in 1836 and became an early settler in the Whanganui region, managing the Taylor & Watt farm at Westmere from around 1871. It was reported in a newspaper that Napier fell from a trap (a light cart) on 28 November 1892 and broke his leg. He returned to Britain where he died on 9March 1908 aged 72 years, at Broughty Ferry in Scotland.
