This sepia-toned carte de visite photograph is of Mr John Toole, licensee of The Royal Oak in Whanganui. It was taken by Frank R Huff at the American Photographic Rooms on Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. This head-and-shoulders portrait shows an old man with white hair and a handlebar moustache.
The image is mounted in an oval mat and glued to a backing card. The photographer's mark is printed on the reverse. The photograph has been torn in two.
John Toole was born in 1815 in Ireland. He enlisted as a private with the 65th Regiment on 25July 1838 and was listed as a labourer of Portadown in County Armagh. He came to New Zealand with the Regiment and was discharged at Whanganui on 31 December 1849. He worked as a storekeeper in Whanganui and was a Warden with the Town Board in 1862.
John and his wife Bridget had the following children in New Zealand: Ann born 1857 Bridget born 1857 Margaret born 1860, married Charles Wallace 1879 Elizabeth born 1862
John's sister Margaret came to New Zealand to join her brother and arrived in Wellington in 1855; she died at John's residence on 25 January 1871 aged 64 years. John's wife Bridget died in 1871 aged 45 years and John died in 1898 aged 93 years.
