Brief Description This carte de visite photograph of Alexander Allison is mounted on black card. The head and shoulders studio portrait is of a man with a long bushy beard and a receding hair line, wearing a dark woollen coat.

Alexander Allison was born in Marlborough, England, in 1849, the son of James Allison. He was a farmer at Lambhill and also at Poari and Warrengate, all in the Whanganui district. He was the first person in New Zealand to grow Chinese gooseberries, later rebranded as kiwifruit. He also initiated ostrich farming in the region.

In 1893 Alexander Allison married Kate Shaw Willway and they had three children:
