Thomas Hudson Davis was born in Preston, England, in 1820. He arrived in New Zealand aboard the Rosebud in 1855-56, having previously been in Australia where he married Elizabeth Taylor (sister of T B Taylor) in Sydney in 1844. In Whanganui Davis opened a shop on Victoria Avenue, was a part-time teacher, a member of the Library Committee, and Organist at the Anglican Church.
Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children: Henry Inman, married Maria Christie in Australia 1866 Robert Taylor, married Isabella Gordon in New Zealand 1869, died 1929 William Hudson, married Clara Maria Silcock in New Zealand 1878, died 1936 George Stevenson, married Alice Rhodes Simpson in Rockhampton, died 1920 Beatrice, married John Spears Russell in New Zealand 1881 Thomas Hudson, married Miss Croucher in Nelson
Thomas Davis (senior) died in Whanganui in 1901 aged 81, and his widow Elizabeth died on 23rd December 1913 aged 91.
