This sepia-toned carte de visite photograph is of Mr Alpha Bennick Harding, taken by Frank R Huff at the American Photographic Rooms on Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. The head-and-shoulders portrait is of a man with short cropped hair and long mutton-chop whiskers. The image is faded. It is mounted in an oval mat and glued to an orange backing card.
Alpha Bennick Harding was born in 1856, the son of Annie and William James Harding. He worked as a surveyor with G F Allen and Mr Gillett of the Manchester Land Company. Allen said of him, "A better fellow than Alpha Harding never lived". Harding married Christina Agnes Bartholomew in 1883 and they had the following children: William Guy, born 1883, married Esme Valerie Coates in 1911 Roy Lindsay, born 1885, married Adeline Coleman Shere in 1909 Lionel, born 1886, married Mildred Annie Voss in 1916 John Eric, born 1889, died 1928 aged 39 years Dorothy Isabel, born 1893, married Rollo Alexander Ramsay in 1922 Philip Bret, born 1895, died 1918 aged 22 years
