Alfred James Berry was born in 1853 and was an early resident of Whanganui. He married Elizabeth Ashdown in 1876 and they had the following children:

Mildred Ethel, born 1881, married Hubert Francis Davis in 1901
Harold Wilfred, born 1883, married Gladys Ruby Armstrong in 1912, died 1918 aged 35-years
Claude Ashdown, born 1885, married Carrie Winifred Bridger in 1919
Rhoda Amy Briar, born 1890, died 1891 aged 3-months
Dorothy Myrtle, born 1893, married Ralph Pearson in 1921
Reginald Alfred, born 1896
Alfred James Berry died in Auckland Hospital on 2nd May 1927, aged 73-years. Elizabeth died at her daugher's residence in Linwood on 4th April 1936, aged 81-years.
