Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; Reception To T.R.H. Duke & Duchess of York, Wanganui, New Zealand. 3.3.1927
Brief Description This hand-coloured panorama photograph is of the reception in Wanganui to mark the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, held in Cooks Gardens, in 1927. TheTourist Department commissioned the R P Moore studio to cover the 1927 Royal Tour. The Duke and Duchess of York arrived on HMS Renown on 22 February, leaving exactly one month later after an extensive national tour. In 1936, after the Abdication of Edward VIII, The Duke became King George VI.

Cooks Gardens has witnessed many significant civic and sporting events, and has been developed to provide excellent sports facilities including a world-class velodrome.

John Tylee, commissariat for the Imperial troops stationed at the Rutland and York stockades, built his house here in 1853. Now known as Tylee Cottage, it is shown here on its original site facing Wilson Street; it is the sloping red-roofed building to the right of the central grandstand. In 1984 it was re-sited in Bell Street and restored. It now provides accommodation for the Whanganui artist-in-residence scheme.
