This original carte de visite photograph is of Mr Barr. The sepia-washed studio portrait shows his head and torso. He wears a dark suit jacket fastened at the neck by the top button only; the rest of jacked is unbuttoned. This is worn over a loosely buttoned waistcoat. A dark cravat is worn at the neck. He has a full moustache and short beard; his hair is cropped, oiled and styled with a side parting.
Embossed below the image is: "W. J. HARDING" and a hand written paper label reads "Barr" in black ink.
John Barr was bornin Scotland, the son of William. He emigrated to New Zealand where he married Celia Turner in Wellington in 1849. The Barr's made their way to Whanganui where John had various jobs including a draper, a merchant's clerk and an accountant. He was also the Secretary at Wanganui Common School and a juror. John and Celia had the following children: William born 1851, married Elizabeth Dickson (daughter of Peter) in August 1885 No name registered born 1853 Celia born 1856, married Thomas Rowe in 1889, died 1936 aged 80 years Sarah born 1857, married Arthur Samuel Chapman in 1883, died 1950 aged 93 years John Turner born 1858 James born 1860 Mark born 1864, married Margaret Ann Fowler (daughter of George) in January 1895 Albert born 1866 Margaret Lyon born 1868 Mary born 1869 Thomas Taylor born 1871, died 1949 aged 76 years Grace born 1873, , married John Barr in 1902, died 1943 aged 70 years Hannah born 1876
John died in January 1896 aged 75 years, and Celia died in 1912 aged 83 years.
