James Riddell was born in Caithness in Scotland, son to James Senior. They arrived in New Zealand in 1859 aboard the ship "Motaka", where James Junior was educated at Wellington College before settling as a farmer at 'Kohi' in Waitotara. He served as a member of the Patea County Council, and was also a Church Office bearer. In July 1885 he married Mary McLean, daughter of John McLean, and they had the following children: Margaret born 1886, married Robert Colter Gray in 1912, died 1963 aged 77 years. James born 1888. Annie Jane born 1889, married James Thomas Sharp in 1912, died 1955 aged 66 years.
