Name/Title |
Myrmecophaga tridactyla (Giant anteater); juvenile, mounted
|
Brief Description |
A young giant anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla. Giant anteaters are found in Central and South America. They dig up ants and termites with their powerful claws and collect them with their long sticky tongues. Adults grow up to 2 m long, but this specimen is a juvenile.
This fully mounted specimen was removed from its original base probably during the creation of diorama displays in the 1970s; its new base was made for display 1995. Because it is pictured in the 1899 interior Museum photograph, it is possible from the original SH Drew collection.
