Name/Title Crassostrea ingens (giant oyster); fossil
Brief Description Crassostrea ingens was common in the sea around Whanganui 2.5 million years ago, and over about 20,000 years an enormous bed of their shells built up. Now called the Wilkies Shellbed formation, you can see it most easily at a cutting on the Whanganui River Road between Parikino and Ātene. As well the remains of oysters up to 30 cm long, the shellbed has preserved dozens of species of marine snails and shellfish.
