Name/Title Sigillaria sp. (Lycopod tree); trunk, fossil
Brief Description Sigillaria was a genus of prehistoric trees related to the living clubmosses. They lived in the Late Carboniferous to Permian era, 383 to 254 million years ago, and their remains form many coal deposits; this fossil is coal. Sigillaria had a non-woody trunk made of the bases of its grass-like leaves; the scars from fallen leaves can be seen in this fossil.
