Name/Title Lepidodendron sternbergii (scale tree); fossil
Brief Description Lepidodendron, or scale trees, were relatives of the lycopods or clubmosses. They lived in swamps in the Carboniferous era, 359 to 300 million years ago, and grew into enormous semi-woody trees up to 30 m tall. The distinctive scale-like pattern on leaf bases on their trunk fooled people into thinking they were the remails of scaly snakes or lizards.
