Name/Title Lobodon carcinophagus (Crabeater seal); mount
Brief Description Crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophagus), a fully mounted specimen with pale brown fur. This specimen was the first (and northernmost) recorded from New Zealand, and came ashore near the Whanganui River mouth in 1885. It was wrongly identified as a Weddell seal by Hector, and not correctly identified until 1921.
