Brief Description |
This large copper-bronze medal was struck for the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand to celebrate the bicentenary of the rediscovery of New Zealand by Captain James Cook.
The obverse has a left profile of Cook with a globe behind showing New Zealand and the south east coast of Australia. Around the rim is embossed the words "JAMES COOK, CIRCUMNAVIGATOR OF THE GLOBE, EXPLORER OF THE PACIFIC." and "Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand, 1969."
The reverse shows the bark "Endeavour" anchored alongside a New Zealand coastline. Text is embossed at lower right, reading "H. M. BARK ENDEAVOUR" / COMPLEMENT 94 MEN / 368 TONS BURDEN / LENGTH 106 FEET / BEAM 29 FEET". Embossed around the rim are the words "BICENTENARY OF JAMES COOK'S RESDISCOVERY OF NEW ZEALAND." "1769-1969".
