Noted Whanganui historian Maxwell James Grant Smart, known as Max, a former farmer and World War I serviceman, had been Honorary Conchologist at the Museum since 1946. He became Honorary Director in 1951, the position being effectively what the Director’s role is today. He held this position for nine years, developing into an admired museum professional and a respected historian.
