Name/Title Diprotodon opatum (marsupial); fossil teeth
Brief Description Diprotodon was a gigantic marsupial, related to the wombat but weighing over 2,000 kg. This species inhabited Australia, becoming extinct 45,000 years ago, probably from human hunting. Remains of Diprotodons are often found in dried-up lake beds, suggesting they died during drought conditions. These teeth were excavated at Lake Mulligan (Lake Callabonna) in northern South Australia, probably as part of the 1893 expedition by the South Australia Museum which uncovered hundreds of complete skeletons. They are labelled in Samuel Drew's handwriting.
