Brief Description |
A black and white photograph of "The Drop Scene" on the Whanganui River, surrounded by heavily forested river banks. A man and a woman float in a rowboat in the middle of the river. About five kilometres upriver from Pīpīriki, you come across what is known as "The Drop Scene". There are several stories about how this place got its name. One is that the dramatic scenery looks like a theatre backdrop. Another is that as you look upriver through the gorge, an optical illusion gives the impression that the river is dropping away in front of you.
One of 38 black and white photographs of Whanganui River scenes taken during the river trip of William Salt (brother) and Mary Salt (sister) and party, who rowed down down the Whanganui River from Taumarunui in about 1910. Information on back of photograph comes from G J Wilks, brother of the donor who made the voyage, or part of it.
