Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; Lowering of the new Aramoho Railway Bridge Span
Brief Description A black and white composite photograph showing the lowering of the new steel span of the Aramoho Bridge on the Whanganui River.
The top photograph shows the first span almost into position with the crowd looking on.
The bottom photograph shows an indication of what was done. The new steel span is in position and the old wooden span has been lowered with the new structure. The old span was later dismantled.
The caption on the card states: "Bridge Span Lowered. Thirty-six hours of feverish activity climaxed about 10 months work on the first new section of the Aramoho railway bridge. The line was closed for only 36 hours while railway gangs lowered the new pickaback steel structure into place with the old wooden superstructure suspended below. It took four teams, one on each corner of the new span, to lower the bridge with specially imported jacks. Thousands of people gathered to watch operations."
Both sections of the composite photograph are mounted on white backing paper.
