Brief Description |
This bright yellow cardboard stand ticket gives entry to a Māori versus Springboks match in Auckland in 1956. This is a tongue-in-cheek pastiche ticket, created when South Africa's apartheid policies were developing.
The creator, H Ruru, was one of the district selectors for the Māori All Blacks training to play the Springboks at Auckland. He quietly let it be known that he had a number of tickets to the stand. Immediately, he was everybody's friend. He was invited out and shouted drinks at the hotel. Several offered to buy a ticket for prices up to as much as £5. When the demand was increased on the morning of the match Ruru gave out his invalid stand tickets.
