Brief Description |
This siapo, a barkcloth or tapa, is from the Solomon Islands and is possibly made from hibiscus fibre. Rectangular in shape, the siapo has a fawn background, a hand painted blue border, a design motif and patches of deep smoky blue dye over the background.
The design motif features alternate rows of blue dugong (slightly abstracted) and capital "I" shapes. Each row has three motifs. The blue dye is called pau and is derived from the wild indigo plant.
