Small black and white photograph of Major Chalres Blewitt/Bluett, later reprint of an original carte de visite. Studio portrait of a man wearing pale trousers and a long dark coat, holding a top hat in one hand and an umbrella in the other, standing in profile with a carved wooden table next to him. Man has tidy hair and a bushy mutton-chop beard. Charles Blewitt was born in 1825. He purchased an army commission as Ensign in the 65th Regiment in 1846 followed by a Captaincy in 1855, and arrived in New Zealand in 1854. He later became a Major of the 65th Regiment and when he retired in 1884 he was reported as being a General. Major Charles Blewitt married Isabella Blanche on 5th January 1870, at Bath, United Kingdom. He is also thought to have married a Miss Nixon (no record on Births, Deaths & Marriages NZ), and to have had one daughter Annie (mother named Waka) and possibly a son. Major Blewitt passed away in 1908 in South Kensington, United Kingdom.
