A Henry VI hammered silver groat (four pence) from between 1422-1427. The obverse has the head of King Henry VI with annulets at the neck and the reverse side features the cross and pellets with annulets in two quarters. Obverse reads “HENRIC DI GRA REX ANGL Z FRANC” which translates to: Henry by the Grace of God King of England and France. Reverse reads “POSVI DEUM ADIVTOREM MEUM (VILLA CALISIE)” translates to: I have made God my helper (Town of Calais). The coin was minted in Calais, France.
Henry VI was born 6 December 1421 and died 11 April 1471, he was the youngest ever monach, becoming King at the age of nine months with the death of his father, Henry V, on the 31 August 1422. His reign is remembered for the start of the War of the Roses, between the Houses of York and Lancaster, and William Shakespears trilogy of plays on Henry's life.
