Image shows the man wearing a pair of dark gymnasium briefs, standing on a fur rug and holding a rope to display flexed muscles, looking at the camera and smiling. One of a collection of photographs collected by Richard Jarrett, a well-known exponent of the breathing and exercise regime developed by Eugene Sandow. He was appointed by the Wanganui Education Board as an Honorary Instructor, and was employed to teach breathing exercised to schools within the district. He also ran the Wanganui School of Physical Culture at the Sandow Hall in Lower St Hill Street in the early 20th century and was employed as the Physical Education Instructor at the Winter School in 1904.
