The man is naked except for a pair of black shoes, and posed with his right leg forward and his hands clasped together over his buttocks. One of a collection of photographs collected by Richard Jarrett, a well-known exponent of the breathing and exercise regime developed by Eugene Sandow. He was appointed by the Wanganui Education Board as an Honorary Instructor, and was employed to teach breathing exercised to schools within the district. He also ran the Wanganui School of Physical Culture at the Sandow Hall in Lower St Hill Street in the early 20th century and was employed as the Physical Education Instructor at the Winter School in 1904.
