This Henry VI hammered silver groat (four pence) dates to between 1422-1427. The obverse has the head of King Henry VI of England with annulets at the neck. The reverse side features a cross and pellets with annulets in two quarters. The obverse reads “HENRIC DI GRA REX ANGL Z FRANC” which translates as "Henry by the Grace of God King of England and France." The reverse reads “POSVI DEUM ADIVTOREM MEUM (VILLA CALISIE)” which translates as "I have made God my helper" which refers to the town of Calais, where it was minted.
Henry VI was born 6 December 1421 and died on 11 April 1471. He was the youngest ever English monarch, becoming King at the age of nine months after the death of his father Henry V on 31 August 1422. His reign is remembered for the start of the War of the Roses, fought between the Houses of York and Lancaster.
