This hammered silver penny dates to the reign of King Edward I. The obverse has a full-faced image of Edward I with the inscription "EDWARD R ANGL DNS HYB" which translates as "Edward King of England and Lord of Ireland", around the outside. The reverse features a long cross with pellets in each quarter. Around the outside is "CIVI TAS LONDON" which indicates the coin was minted at the London Mint.
Edward I reigned as King of England from 1272 until his death in 1307. For the first seven years of his reign Edward used the coinage of his father Henry III, but from 1279 new coinage was made in his likeness.
