Brief Description |
This is a New Zealand Golden Kiwi lottery ticket. This ticket was issued for draw number 252 and is ticket number 76573. It consists of pink paper printed with blue and red inks, giving the details of the prizes to be won, including the top prize of £12,000 (equivalent to nearly $500,000 in 2017). The heading on the ticket states "ALL FOR NEW ZEALAND / GOLDEN KIWI / £33,000 / LOTTERY". The prizes and their payouts are listed on the front. There is also a small image of a kiwi with "N.Z.'s OWN" written on its body. Instructions to prize winners are printed on the back of the ticket.
The Golden Kiwi lottery was introduced to New Zealand in 1961 by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Leon Gotz, in response to an increased call for funding from community groups. The lottery was based on art union lotteries which had been run for some time previously. The new format offered a much bigger cash prize. Each lottery was limited to 250,000 tickets and each was drawn only when all the tickets had been sold. The lottery was criticised by some but proved to be a huge success. The first lottery was run on 12 December 1961 and all 250,000 tickets were sold within 24 hours; there were 76 lotteries within the first 12 months. The lottery continued to remain popular for over 20 years but began to lose favour when Lotto was launched in 1987. It was eventually replaced with the Instant Kiwi scratch card lottery in 1989.
