Name/Title |
CASE, HANDKERCHIEF
|
Brief Description |
A cotton handkerchief case is sewn in the form of a blue checked shirt with a white collar, cuffs and pocket. It was used to house dirty handkerchiefs, kept separate from other used clothing because of their rather unsavoury use, until the laundry was done. The handkerchiefs would be inserted into the opening at the neck. A cotton tape is sewn onto the neck for hanging it up.
A folded piece of paper in the pocket has the following hand-written note: ''When your handkerchiefs are dirty / Put them in this little shirty / When the washing days come round / All your hankies will be found".
