This chasuble comes from the old St Mary's Catholic Church which was located in Victoria Avenue, Whanganui. It is made of scarlet velvet lined with scarlet silk brocade and edged with gold braid. The central panel is in canvas work in tent stitch in liturgical colours; the design is outlined in Hungarian stitch. The panel on the back is sewn into the shape of a cross with the letters IHS embroidered on it. A strip of linen lines the neckline to prevent staining from sweat.
A chasuble is the outer liturgical vestment worn during the celebration of the Catholic Mass and is worn over the alb and stole. It is normally made in the liturgical colour appropriate to the Mass being celebrated.
This is a Roman-style chasuble. Red is only worn for the feast of Martyrs and at Pentecost. IHS is the traditional abbreviation of the Greek words for Jesus Christ.
