Brief Description |
One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print is a view of the front of Queens Park School.
Queens Park School served the pupils of central Whanganui from 1906 until 1971. There had been a girls’ school on the site from the 1870s.
Many families lived within the central city, but as train and tram system grew, people could move to the outer suburbs whilst still being able to get to work and the shops. The imposing gateway that commemorates those pupils who served in WW I was erected in 1926.
When the school closed in 1971, there were simply too few people living in town to warrant a primary school there.
