Name/Title PHOTOGRAPH; St Hill Street with the Wanganui Council Chambers and Opera House
Brief Description One of a collection of black and white photographs of buildings and streets in Whanganui, this print is of St Hill St from Ridgway Street. Dodson's Garage and a bill board are in the foreground. The Wanganui Council Chambers and Opera House are visible further down the street.

The Wanganui Council Chambers and the Opera House provided services for citizens on a scale that exceeded many other urban settlements of a similar or much larger scale.

The Opera House opened in 1900. Theatrical and musical entertainments were popular during the 1930s but the Opera House needed constant upkeep. During this time the wiring was upgraded, the first building loan repaid and an annex added while a fire in the sweet stall closed the building down for some months.
