Brief Description |
A tapestry in coloured wools of a large arrangement of flowers in a small vase, was made in 1916 by Mrs Ann Evans, once one of Florence Nightingale's nurses in the Crimean War of 1854. She donated the tapestry as a prize in an Art Union raffle to be drawn on September 21st 1916, with proceeds to be in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The original Art Union ticket that won the prize is also in the Museum collection [1955.57.2] and was donated at the same time as the tapestry.
Ann Evans, once known as Dr Ann, achieved fame when she was taken blindfolded by toa (Maori warriors) to tend the resistance fighter Titokowaru, wounded in one of the many confrontations of the New Zealand Land Wars, to successfully nurse him back to health.
