Brief Description |
This landscape water colour by itinerant painter Christopher Aubrey shows a view of Wanganui River and Town in 1894.
The painting shows the view from Durie Hill where the Red Lion Inn now stands, looking down over the river towards Aramoho. A woman and a young girl walk along the dirt road and a horse with rider and two dogs heard a group of sheep towards them and away from the Barns & Son Auctioneers buildings and stock pens on the river bank. A steam boat manoeuvres its way up the river and a small sailing boat is on the water adjacent to the stock pens. Several waka are pulled up on the far side of the river bank near the wharf, with one waka with five rowers in the water. Several white tents are pitched on the grassy area near the river bank in front of the buildings on Taupo Quay. A group of trees stands where Moutoa Gardens are now located.
The painting has been double matted using beige and white card, and is framed in an ornate gilt frame.
