Brief Description |
Watercolour painting of the Barquentine "Alexa", a three-masted sailing ship at sea with faint outlines of two steam ships and three other vessels in background. The title is inscribed on lower centre of image. The watercolour has been glued to a mount card and is not signed or dated.
The "Alexa" was part of the Hatrick fleet, having been built in Holland and bought by Alexander Hatrick for his flourishing Whanganui transport business in 1905. Originally named "Voorberg", Hatrick rechristened the ship after one of his daughters.
“Within three days of Hatrick’s return … it was announced that he had signed a contract to carry five million feet of white pine timber over a two year period from Hunterville, on the Main Trunk Line, to Australia and that the "Alexa" was to be put on the trade.” [Rapids and Riverboats on the Wanganui River by R D Campbell, 1990.]
