Name/Title ARTISTS PROOFS; 10 Chromolithographic Invitation Cards
Brief Description Chromolithography was an A D Willis specialty. This Whanganui printer and publisher pioneered chromolithography and this set of invitation cards demonstrate the stages of production. The design by Whanganui artist and photographer, Benoni White, was created for an invitation to an event in Rotorua for the 1901 royal visit by the Duke and Duchess of York and Cornwall (later King George V and Queen Mary).

To produce this work 16 separate lithographic plates were produced, each one for a separate colour. Here, artist's proofs of nine of the steps are illustrated. The colour bar in the top right hand corner shows the range of colours and order in which they were printed.

There are 10 proofs in this collection, two of which are duplicates, so the collection demonstrates nine of the 16 processes.
