Brief Description |
This pair of riding spurs, said to have belonged to Major David Stark Durie, are made of silvered iron, the arches made to fit around the heels of riding boots and screwed to each side. An attached arm has a rowell (serrated edged rotating goad) inserted into a slit and screwed securely.
Durie held many governmental and military posts in New Zealand. In 1851 he was appointed Resident Magistrate in Whanganui. He built a home in Purua (or Rob Roy’s Glen) which he named Glen Durie. He named his farm property Durie Vale. Durie Hill and Durie Vale still exist today. The donor is Major Durie’s great grandson.
