Name/Title	HATPIN
Brief Description	A silver-plated metal hatpin is topped with a medium-sized faux pearl pinhead. Hatpins were originally devised to hold wimples and veils in place. In the 1880s women began wearing hats, as opposed to bonnets, and hatpins, now decorative as well as practical, were necessary to secure their hats to their hair. This hatpin belonged to Dorothy Crothers who lived in Whanganui from 1915 to the 1980s. She was the donor's grandmother.
