Brief Description	This painting in pen and ink and wash is of a man sitting on a log and smoking a pipe. Identified as Captain Laye of the 58th Rutlandshire Regiment, this painting is a copy, with variations, of a work by artist J A Gilfillan, who painted the original in the 1840s. T W Downes made this copy as an illustration for his book "Old Whanganui", published in 1915. Chapter III, page 269.
